Message from the Chair

Thomas Bates

Welcome to the Department of Finance.

Finance as a discipline is always relevant at numerous levels. The current financial and economic environment exemplifies the essential role of finance at the confluence of financial markets, business, and public policy.

The W. P. Carey Department of Finance provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to become effective financial professionals.

Our faculty members are cutting-edge researchers with the best training from the most prestigious universities in the world. As a group we are ranked in the top 20 finance research programs among thousands worldwide. Our clinical faculty are experts who have been at the core of the success of some of the most prominent corporations in the world. In collaboration with business and government, our faculty also frequently serve a vital role as public scholars. For example, they participate in policy debates on a number of topics including the efficacy of corporate governance, the efficiency of financial markets, and the role of financial institutions and intermediaries.

We serve a large number of capable, energetic and well-qualified students in our Undergraduate, Master of Science in Finance (MS-FIN), MBA, and PhD programs. A survey conducted by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business found that graduating seniors rate the quality of our faculty's teaching as No.1 in the W. P. Carey School of Business, No. 2 among peer schools nationally and No. 8 among approximately 64 Carnegie-class institutions. We deliver forward-looking, relevant curriculum in unique ways. We provide the means for students to differentiate themselves through innovative programs such as Investment Banking Industry Scholars, Student Investment Management Funds and Intel Collaborative Thesis Project, among others.

Our finance graduate and undergraduate students engage in meaningful ways in the university and broader communities and emphasize high standards for ethical and principled behavior.

Our thousands of successful finance alumni, some of whom serve on our Finance Advisory Board, are successful and visible locally and internationally. The strong partnership between our department and the business community is a key element to the strength of our programs.

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Finance at the W. P. Carey School of Business. For additional information, please contact us at
