International PhD applicants

International applicants are required to provide a number of specific items with their applications. Most of these are referenced in the online application, but the following serves as a quick reference guide. Detailed information for international applicants can be found on the following pages:

Transcripts and degree requirements

The ASU Graduate College requires that international transcripts be designated as official and be submitted in their original language with an English translation.

Individuals who have completed a three-year degree with no additional coursework typically do not qualify as having an equivalent U.S. bachelor's degree. Generally, for a three-year bachelor's degree to be equivalent it must be combined with the following:

Applicants with a 3 year degree and at least one year of graduate study should contact ASU Graduate Admissions to clarify if their degree would be equivalent to a U.S. 4 year degree.

The ASU Graduate College has ultimate responsibility for transcript evaluation and approval of degree equivalency.

English language proficiency

Most international applicants, particularly those for whom English is not their first language, are required to submit evidence of English language proficiency by providing the Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL ) score. The minimum TOEFL requirement is 550 (PBT) or 80 (iBT). Some international applicants are exempt from having to submit TOEFL scores. For more official information, including the dates after which English Proficiency Test must be taken to be valid, refer to the English proficiency information on the Graduate College Website.

Applications will not be processed until official TOEFL scores have been received or waived by ASU Graduate College Admissions.

We do not accept IELTS examination scores.

Once admitted to the program, students applying for teaching associateships are also required to take the Test of Spoken English ( TSE ) or the ASU Speak Test . The minimum TSE score is 55. The minimum iBT SPEAK score is 26.

More information on the TOEFL and TSE can be found on the Internet at www.toefl.org or by e-mail at toefl@ets.org . The TOEFL and TSE are administered by TOEFL/TSE Services, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ, 08541-6151, USA. ASU's Institutional Code is 4007. If the Department Code is required for TOEFL, use 99.
