Geoffrey Smith was born in Methuen, Massachusetts, the only city in the world named after Paul Methuen, and also the birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Elias James Corey, and of Major Robert Rogers, commander of the famous Rogers' Rangers, whose 28 "Rules of Ranging," created in 1757 during the French and Indian War, are still considered the model for U.S. Army Ranger activities. He earned a high school diploma from Brooks School in 1986, a bachelor's from Bradley University in 1989, a MBA from DePaul University in 1992, and a doctorate from the University of Georgia in 2006.
From 1990 to 2001, he worked in finance at Newark Electronics, where he acquired excellent computer spreadsheet skills, as a senior credit analyst at First NH Bank (n/k/a Citizens Bank), where he became very skilled in reading financial statements and in making commercial loans, and in finance at New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, where he learned about investment banking, municipal bonds, and housing finance. During this time, Professor Smith would also teach night classes in economics and finance at New Hampshire College (n/k/a SNHU). His first full-time faculty position was at ASU in 2006. He has also held faculty positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Tulane University. His research is published in Critical Finance Review, Finance Research Letters, Financial Accountability & Management, Financial Review, Journal of Wealth Management, and Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting.
