Masters (MBA and MSFIN) Investment Management Fund

The W. P. Carey Masters Investment Management Fund (SIM Fund) was established in 1996 by the Department of Finance. Initial contributions to the fund were provided by generous private donors and the ASU Foundation Endowment Fund.

This fund allows participating Masters students to gain practical, hands-on experience in portfolio management and securities analysis while earning credit toward their degrees. A team of students is selected each year through a competitive process to actively manage the fund during the second year of their Masters program. They are also exposed to various aspects of money management, including administrative duties.

The portfolio of investments represents a diverse collection of investment vehicles, ranging from equities to fixed-income securities. Equity investments cover companies that extend across many industries.

Fund Advisory Board presentations

A Fund Advisory Board composed of investment professionals oversees the SIM Fund. Twice a year, the Masters students present reports to the board covering fund performance and rationale for decisions and management. Here are links to full presentations for the 2008-2026 academic year reports:

How to get involved

The Masters SIM Fund program is composed of masters students who have earned second-year status by the fall term.

Application Timeline

Applications for the 2027–2028 academic year will be accepted:

  • February 1 – March 22, 2027

Late submissions will not be accepted.

Applicants must include the following:

  • Resume

  • 1–2 page personal statement addressing:
    • Your career goals and interest in participating in the fund
    • Your academic and professional background, including relevant skills (especially quantitative skills) and what you would contribute to the fund

Selection Process

Applications will be reviewed by the Fund Director and current fund members. Selected candidates will be notified in late April.
