Program details
The AZNext Introduction to Health Analytics program consists of two five-week modules. Participants will receive faculty-facilitated instruction, readings, exercises, and computing using R. There will be a weekly two-hour online live virtual lecture to discuss each week's specialized topics and provide an example.
>> You'll use the Statistical Analytics for Health Data Science with SAS and R textbook by Jeffrey Wilson, Ding-Geng Chen, and Karl E. Peace.
>> Professors Wilson and Chen will be your module instructors.
Module 1: Chapters 1, 2, and 3
Module 2: Chapters 4 and 5
Who is this program for?
Designed based on "making decisions with the numbers," the AZNext healthcare analytics course is ideal for healthcare managers and employees seeking to understand the usage of data-driven decision-making in the industry.
We welcome people with backgrounds with GED and high school mathematics to apply. No R experience is needed. Candidates must submit an online application and complete a pre-assessment to verify eligibility and baseline skills required for admission.
Program participants must be:
What will I learn?
Participants in the AZNext Introduction to Health Analytics program will learn more about the basics of modern data analytics techniques using R. You'll contextualize what you're learning through relevant data decisions based on examples given by ASU faculty and your working environments.
ASU faculty will showcase how to implement basic data analytics techniques in almost any discipline. They'll demonstrate through data and examples from health, business, supply chain, education, and transportation.
Learning themes:
- Make use of a subset of the population to extrapolate to the entire population with a certain degree of accuracy
- Choose such a subset to inform the decision maker and to improve accuracy in the extrapolation
- Utilize R (an open-source software) in decisions

What careers can this program lead to?
Participants who complete this program will receive an AZNext ASU Digital Certificate. With the aid of R and your collected data, you'll be prepared and able to make decisions based on a given subset of the population.
This knowledge may help you launch a data scientist career — a fast-growing role that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects will grow 33 percent over the next few years.
