Academic Support

At the W. P. Carey School of Business, your academic success is important to us. Because we know our students strive for academic excellence, the undergraduate program offers many academic success programs and services.

Academic Cohorts

Academic cohorts are only offered the fall semester of your freshman year and may consist of WPC 101 (academic success for business students) and some core classes such as brief calculus, computer applications and/or first-year composition. These classes are then grouped together in pre-set schedules known as cohorts. Each cohort is limited to only 19 students.

Cohorts benefit you by helping you build a network of peers with whom you can study and learn. It also means you are guaranteed a seat in some courses at popular times.

As a participant in this program, you benefit by being able to build a network of peers to study and learn with. You also are guaranteed seats for popular courses within the academic cohort program.

One semester includes five to 10 hours of required business and ASU general studies courses, allowing for flexibility when registering for remaining credit hours. Your academic advisor will help you to register for a cohort when you attend ASU orientation.

What students are saying about the academic cohorts:

  • "This was real helpful in making this place feel like a home. It made the campus feel smaller."
  • "It was easier to form study groups because all the same kids are in the same class."
  • "It helped me create a community of familiar faces."

WPC 101: The ASU Experience

WPC 101 is a required one-credit, once-a-week seminar course for freshman. Each class has no more than 19 students and introduces you to academic success strategies, resources and services available on campus. The class goal is to prepare you for a successful academic, engaged and professional career at W. P. Carey and beyond.

This one-credit course meets weekly and includes up to 19 students who are members of the same academic cohort. These students also will take various core classes together.

Freshman Scheduling Workshop

Your first year at W. P. Carey is about making choices that will start you on the road to a successful academic career as a business student. To help you prepare for your second semester, your academic advisor will work with you to help you understand your degree requirements and what it takes to stay on track toward graduation. Your advisor will also help you understand and use such tools as ASU’s online Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) and eAdvisor.

This workshop is required of all first-semester freshmen in the W. P. Carey School of Business and allows you to move forward with registering for your second semester. You will meet with an academic advisor who will help you select your second semester schedule based on your declared academic programs, goals and needs.
