Finance Major Requirements

The study of finance prepares students to understand the financial implications inherent in virtually all business decisions. Students majoring in Finance are prepared for entry-level careers in corporate financial management, investment banking, consulting, depository institutions, portfolio analysis, investment management, and financial services. The finance curriculum emphasizes corporate investment and financial policy, financial markets, valuation of financial and real assets, and efficient allocation of resources.

The following is in effect for catalog years 2008-09 and 2007-08 (retroactive) for Finance degree critical tracking requirements:

  • A minimum grade of "B" will be required only in ACC 321, ACC 241 and FIN 302.
  • Honors students taking an honors equivalent course of the above courses need only a minimum "C" grade  The honors equivalent courses are:     
    • ACC 231 (old 230) alternate honors courses ACC 261 or ACC 303 require C minimum.
    • ACC 241 (old 240) alternate honors course ACC 271 requires C minimum.

Pre-Business Students

Current Finance Majors - If your catalog is  2006-2007 or earlier, the following resources are available for tracking your degree requirements.

SPECIAL NOTE:

  • FIN 461 meets a General Studies "L" (literacy) requirement.
  • FIN 484 Internship and FIN 493 Honors Thesis CANNOT be used in the major.
  • FIN 456 may be used in either the major or as the International Business Core requirement, but CANNOT share in both areas.
  • A second "D" or "E" grade in a major course, cannot continue in the major. Please see a Finance major advisor, about options if this happens.
  • ACC 316 Management Uses of Accounting and FIN 484 Internship are encouraged to take for Finance majors as elective credit.

Graduation Requirements

Students in the Professional Program are required to complete a Declaration of Graduation upon completing 87 semester hours. Students who have not met this requirement are prevented from further registration. Your advisor will review your degree audit and assist you with your Declaration of Graduation. Most students complete a Declaration of Graduation as a course requirement in WPC 301 in the first semester in the Professional Program.
