Accountancy Major Requirements

The major in Accountancy includes the essential academic preparation for students who are

  • Pursuing professional careers in public, corporate, and governmental accounting;
  • Seeking positions in personal financial planning and portfolio analysis;
  • Seeking positions in consulting;
  • Planning to operate their own businesses; or 
  • Planning to pursue a graduate degree or attend law school.

  • Honors students taking an honors equivalent course of ACC 231 and/or ACC 241 need only a minimum "C" grade  The honors equivalent courses are:    

    ACC 231 (old 230) alternate honors courses ACC 261 or ACC 303 require C minimum.
    ACC 241 (old 240) alternate honors course ACC 271 requires C minimum.

Pre-Business Students

Current Accountancy Majors - If your catalog is  2006-2007 or earlier, the following resources are available for tracking your degree requirements.

You are eligible to apply to the Professional Program in the semester you will be earning 56 credit hours (usually your second semester sophomore year). You must be completing your last skill course(s) in the semester you apply. The application to the Professional Program may be found online during the months of January, May and September. The most up-to-date information on deadlines and requirements can be found at: Professional Program.

SPECIAL NOTE:

  • Accountancy applicants must take CIS 220
  • CIS 105 is not an acceptable SKILL course for Accountancy applicants
  • For further information about taking ACC courses please contact a pre-business advisor
Professional Program Students in Accountancy

Once admitted to the Professional Program, you are eligible to take upper division (300 and 400 level) business classes. There are six upper division Accountancy courses in the major (18 credit hours).

  • ACC 340
  • ACC 350
  • ACC 430
  • ACC 440
  • ACC 444
  • ACC 450

These Accountancy courses, 19 hours of upper division business core courses, seven hours of major support courses and nine hours of major electives are required for the Accountancy major. For general studies and other W. P. Carey School of Business and University degree requirements, refer to your degree audit report.

Graduation Requirements

Students in the Professional Program are required to complete a Declaration of Graduation upon completing 87 semester hours. Students who have not met this requirement are prevented from further registration. Your advisor will review your degree audit and assist you with your Declaration of Graduation. Most students complete a Declaration of Graduation as a course requirement in WPC 301 in the first semester in the Professional Program.
