Finance Major

This major prepares students to understand the financial implications inherent in virtually all business decisions. Students majoring in finance are prepared for entry-level careers in corporate management, depository institutions, investment management, and financial services. The finance curriculum emphasizes financial markets, evaluation of investments, and efficient allocation of resources.

As a discipline, finance can be classified into three areas: managerial, investments, and markets and institutions.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD

Students majoring in finance may be employed as financial analysts in manufacturing, commercial, or service enterprises or in government. Initial assignments might include:

Investments and portfolio management:

  • account executives
  • security analysts
  • portfolio managers

Financial services:

  • personal financial planners
  • account executives
  • financial advisors

Banking and financial institutions:

  • lending
  • investments
  • trust
  • real estate
  • international divisions of commercial banks
  • savings and loan associations
  • or other financial institutions.

HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE PREPARATION

High school students should have a strong college preparation record and be well prepared in math, science, and English.
