Economics Major
This major affords an opportunity for the student to acquire general knowledge of the methods by which goods and services are allocated and incomes are generated and why prices, employment, money, and financial markets behave as they do. Economics is a decision science that analyzes the overall economy of the nation and the world--trends in prices, employment, and output. Once these phenomena are understood, economists help develop the policies to improve overall economic performance.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD
The traditional employment opportunities of universities and government expanded rapidly to include:
- manufacturing
- investment and banking
- transportation
- retailing
- consulting
- non-profit organizations
UNIQUENESS OF THE PROGRAM AT ASU
A small number of highly dedicated students pursue the economics major which allows for upper-division classes of approximately 30 students, thus facilitating meaningful interaction among students and between students and faculty members. The Department of Economics is affiliated with Omicron Delta Epsilon, one of the oldest honorary societies in the United States. Honors courses are routinely offered in conjunction with Barrett, the Honors College.
HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE PREPARATION
High school graduates should be well prepared in mathematics, history, and English. Advanced placement through high school calculus permits majors to expand their mathematical horizons at the university.
