The role of the accountant has been transformed in recent years. Technological advances have created an environment of rapid growth, and in response, accounting information systems have evolved in complexity. Since accounting is the "language of business," a background in accounting enhances the education of anyone in business.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD
Job openings in accounting have increased steadily over the last two decades. Accounting graduates have a variety of career options in public accounting, industry, or government.
- Public accountants are considered to be independent authorities who provide a variety of financial services (e.g., consulting, setting up accounting systems, preparing and auditing financial statements, planning tax strategies)
- Industry accountants work for corporations preparing financial statements or auditing the records of the manufacturing or marketing operations
- Government accountants may work for the Department of Defense, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, or Securities and Exchange Commission

The School of Accountancy is an Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Internationally accredited accounting program and the undergraduate program is consistently ranked among the top 15 programs in the nation. The undergraduate degree in accountancy contains courses in computer information systems developed specifically for accounting majors.
HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE PREPARATION
High school students should be well prepared in math, science, English, communications, and computers; and should have a strong college preparation record.
