Software & Data - SAS and SPSS-PASW Licenses

Both SAS and SPSS are available under a variety of licensing plans, so the license that you should utilize will depend on a few factors.

SAS Licensing Plans

BIT can install SAS on any ASU-owned computer under a license managed centrally for the entire university. This installation is considered a stand-alone license. Therefore, the software will function when you are at ASU, at home, or traveling.

The only limitation in the SAS license is that the software must be installed on an ASU-owned computer. If you would like to install SAS on a personally owned computer, then you should contact the Computer Store at 965-4488. They can tell you what they need to fulfill an order as well as answer pricing and licensing questions. BIT will not be able to manage the license renewals for licenses purchased at the Computer Store or any license outside of the university's SAS license. SAS purchased from the bookstore will not include Enterprise Miner, so if you want to utilize Enterprise Miner, SAS must be installed using the license from the university and must be installed on an ASU-owned computer.

For individuals who would like to utilize Eventus in SAS, you must also use the university's license. To utilize Eventus, our license requires that SAS be run while connected to the ASU network. It is possible to utilize Eventus at school and utilize SAS away from school, but you will have a separate icon for each task - two (2) icons total.

SPSS-PASW Licensing Plans

SPSS is available for all faculty, staff, and PhD students through the university license. This license can be installed by BIT on any ASU-owned computer. These licenses are controlled centrally for the entire university and are renewed annually. This licenses does not include Conjoint Analysis.

BIT also maintains 25 concurrent use licenses (only 25 people may access the program at any given time) that includes Conjoint Analysis. These licenses are renewed annually. If you require conjoint analysis you must use this license.  This is currently installed on Citrix and can be installed locally if required.

Licenses for SPSS-PASW can be purchased for personally-owned computers at the ASU Computer Store. BIT cannot automatically manage the license renewal for personal purchases of SPSS through the Computer store. A personally purchased license will not include Conjoint Analysis.

SAS and SPSS-PASW License FAQ

Q: Why would I want to purchase a copy of SAS or SPSS?

A: The main reason to purchase SAS from the Computer Store is that you would like to install SAS on a personally owned computer.

There is no reason for faculty, staff, or PhD students to purchase base SPSS. If you need to include additional add-ins (modules) to SPSS-PASW, you should install SPSS-PASW from the University license and purchase just the additional add-ins (modules) from SPSS-PASW.

Q: I have a copy of SAS or SPSS-PASW installed on my computer. How do I know which license I have?

A: For SPSS-PASW, open a new syntax file. Type "show license." without the quote marks but include the period. Submit this syntax, and examine the maximum number of users. If you see one (1) then you have the University license. If you see more than one (1) then you have the School of Business license.

For SAS, type "proc setinit;run;" in the editor without the quote marks but include the semicolons. If you see Enterprise Miner in the log, you have the School of Business license. Otherwise, you have the Computer Store license.

Q: My copy of SAS from the Computer Store or SPSS-PASW from the University license has expired or is about to expire. How do I renew it?

A: For SAS, the University Technology Office provides information for any SAS user torenew their own license and it may be found here.

For SPSS-PASW, the University should post another authorization code in www.asu.edu/asusoftware. You may renew existing licenses by entering this authorization code in the License Authorization Wizard and selecting get key from the Internet. In version 16, this is your only choice.

Both SAS and SPSS-PASW will have "grace periods" and will display renewal warnings before ceasing to function.
