Computer Equipment Policy
1-to 1 Computer Allocation Policy
Recommended by the Business IT Strategic Oversight Committee (BITSOC), 23 March 2007 Approved by the Dean, 28 March 2007
In an ongoing effort to provide reliable, high-quality technology products and services, the W. P. Carey School of Business has instituted a policy of allocating one computer per faculty or staff member.
For those whose work is largely performed at the School, a desktop computer is the correct choice. For occasional work away from the office, the School maintains a small pool of laptop computers that can be made available on a short-term basis.
In most cases in which the individual travels frequently, or works in multiple locations such as office and home, a laptop computer is the most appropriate solution. A single portable computer, suitably outfitted with a large-screen display and standard keyboard for in-office use, provides the same functionality as a desktop machine and is simpler and cheaper to support and maintain than two separate desktop machines at different locations, which are typically of different ages and configurations.
The School realizes that in certain cases it is necessary for specialized users to have multiple computers to perform their duties, and exceptions will be made upon demonstration of the academic or business need and with approval of the department or unit head.
This policy is being phased in as older equipment is replaced. When a computer is replaced, the faculty or staff member will be required to return all School computers in their possession to BIT in exchange for the new computer. Exceptions will require a form explaining the academic or business justification for the additional equipment and the approval of the department or unit head. Expenses, including software, relating to the acquisition and maintenance of the additional equipment are the responsibility of the department or unit. Any older equipment retained as an approved exception must conform to the Sunset Policy to be eligible for support from BIT. (Please note also that, if located at home or otherwise off School premises, approved equipment in need of repair or other in-person support must be brought to BIT; "house calls" cannot be provided.)
The 1-to-1 Computer Allocation Policy does not apply to equipment purchased with grant funding
