The MHSM curriculum has been thoughtfully designed to provide future health sector leaders with the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to succeed. Building on your prior experiences and classroom activities and reading, the MHSM will provide you with ample opportunity to excel in your chosen profession. You will follow the same plan of study throughout your time in the MHSM program. You can identify your plan of study by the year in which you began your program.

Business Core
MGT 502 Organization Theory and Behavior
Concepts and applications of management including motivation, leadership, group dynamics, organization design, decision-making, communication and organization change.
ECN 502 Managerial Economics
Application of microeconomic analysis to managerial decision-making at the firm-level in areas of supply and demand, production, cost and pricing. Evaluation of competitive strategies.
MKT 502 Marketing Management
Managing the marketing function; market and environmental analysis; marketing planning, strategy and control concepts. Development and management of marketing programs.
ACC 502 Financial Accounting
Managerial accounting concepts and procedures for internal reporting.
FIN 502 Managerial Finance
Theory and practice of financial decision making, including risk analysis, valuation, capital budgeting, cost of capital, and working capital management.
Health Sector Management Core
HSM 505 Managerial Epidemiology I
Basic constructs and measures of epidemiology. Epidemiologic study designs. Potential impact of chance, bias, confounding, on an epidemiologic study. Causal criteria; levels of evidence in epidemiological studies, implications and limitations of statistical association.
HSM 561 Biostatistics
Compute sample and population statistics, hypothesis testing, correlation regression and logistic regression using SAS.
HSM 502 Health Care Organization
Concepts, structures, functions and values characterizing contemporary health care systems in the United States.
HSM 512 Health Care Economics
Economics of production and distribution of health care services, with special emphasis on the impact of health insurance, government regulation, and economic incentives.
HSM 522 Health Sector Information Management
Strategic application of information technology in health care organizations. Managerial and operational issues with leveraging IT to transform business processes to improve efficiency, quality, and patient safety.
HSM 564 Health Care Finance
Overview of the acquisition, allocation, and management of financial resources by health care providers. Focuses on economic, financial, and accounting principles.
HSM 589 Health Care Strategic Management
Assessment of current policies, problems, and controversies across the broad spectrum of health services administration.
HSM 542 Health Care Law
Legal aspects of health care delivery for managers in the health sector. Legal responsibilities of the health care manager and staff.
HSM 584 Internship (Capstone) An internship is required for all MHSM degree-seeking students. The purpose of the internship is to provide students with a real-world, management-related experience in the health sector.Students participate in specific, evidence-based projects that have implications for health policymaking, organizational efficiency, cost-effective delivery of health services, or improved health care system performance.

Application of epidemiologic methods and information to managerial decision making, including: role and responsibilities of a project manager, risk perception and motivation, crisis management, social marketing and health promotion, use of GIS systems.HSM 565
HSM 565 Introduction to Health Policy
Examination of various aspects of health care policymaking through a policy framework involving policy processes, arenas, players, and stakeholders. Analysis of current health policy issues in the context of the policy framework.
HSM 578 Managing Clinical Trials
Read and understand published reports of clinical trials and observation studies, understand strengths and weaknesses of experimental and observational study designs, evaluate the scientific and practical issues to chose interventions that are both relevant and feasible.
HSM 598 Managing Change in the Health Care Value Chain
An extensive examination of the organizations contributing to the production of health care including suppliers, distributors, group purchasing organizations and government. Scrutiny of the organizations and strategies comprising the health care supply chain. A special focus on risks, physician preference item management; the relationships necessary to achieve high quality care, improved safety; and ethical challenges.
HSM 598 Applied Biostatistics Topics covered include multiple regression, logistic regression, and survival analysis. The course also emphasizes the understanding of risk as it relates to health outcomes. This is the second course in the statistics sequence.
HSM 575 Health Policy Management and Evaluation
Provides students with the analytical techniques and real world experience to manage the implementation and evaluation of changes in health policy.
