Master of Public Health Mission Statement and Vision
Mission Statement
The mission of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program is to provide high quality graduate-level public health education and career enhancement activities to prepare students for successful careers as leaders of public health initiatives in urban settings. In collaboration with community and university partners the program aims to integrate the core areas of public health with specialized training in community and mental health issues relevant to urban areas, and the skills and competencies needed to work effectively with urban populations. The MPH is designed for persons who come to the program with experience as health professionals, or in public policy positions, or for recent college graduates with outstanding academic records and career aspirations to become leaders in public health practice in major urban areas. The program is committed to providing students with the strategic planning and leadership skills necessary to initiate effective change, and instilling the values of excellence, accountability, and integrity in our graduates. Within the School of Health Management and Policy (SHMP), the MPH program is the focal part of our mission to provide quality graduate education in public health services and leadership. SHMP aspires to be a model of community/university collaboration in training the next generation of leaders in public health.
Vision
We envision an MPH program that takes an expansive view of health as the integration of mind, body, and spirit such that healthy persons have the human and social capital necessary to attain their personal and professional goals. In this context, public health involves the creation of safe and supportive communities with adequate resources to produce healthy children, adults, and families.
We envision a program that empowers graduates with the knowledge, self-awareness, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills necessary to become agents of change in promoting healthy urban communities.
We envision a collaboration in which SHMP and the College of Nursing & Health Innovation work with key partners in inner-city Phoenix to create an MPH program that becomes a model for public health education in urban areas.
