W. P. Carey MBA Specialization in Real Estate
The MBA specialization in real estate is a rigorous two-year program. Students enroll in the first-year core coursework required of all students in this nationally-ranked and respected MBA curriculum. In the second year, students will concentrate on a track that best aligns with their career objectives. They may select from a tailored, flexible combination of finance, design, law or construction. At least 18 credit hours of real estate coursework and an intensive field study project are also required. These highly qualified graduates will be prepared to take leadership roles in corporate settings, entrepreneurial environments and professional organizations.
Graduate Real Estate Courses in the W. P. Carey School of Business
Real Estate Process I & II: Overview of real estate with an emphasis on finance and development. Introduction to real estate cash flow modeling using ARGUS with CoStar and LoopNet data. Also SNL, TREPP or Conquest. (2 x 1.5 hours = 3 hours in total)
Real Estate Capital Markets – Debt & Equity Modules: Real estate securitization from a debt (MBS) and equity (REIT, CREF, RELP) perspective. Bricks and sticks meets Wall Street. (2 x 1.5 hours = 3 hours in total)
Real Estate Development I & II: Emphasis on the role of finance in the development process and the interaction of finance with the various disciplines (law, urban planning, etc) including real options. (2 x 1.5 hours = 3 hours in total)
Practicum in Real Estate Analysis: Team field study project with site and supervision from a Real Estate Industry Scholar. (1.5 hours)
Real Estate Analysis: Case study course. Real world problems with a finance emphasis will be analyzed (Faculty & Real Estate Industry Scholars) (1.5 hours)
Real Estate Marketing: Locational analysis and GIS. (3 hours)
Real Estate Economics: Real estate from a macro-perspective. Big picture required to see where growth and development should occur. In depth analysis of real estate markets both housing and commercial – hot versus cold. Emphasis on spatial modeling using econometrics in conjunction with census and other data. (1.5 hours)
Advanced Financial Management: This course concentrates on financial forecasting and risk modeling via simulation techniques.
Real Option and Real Estate: Real options are useful tools that can guide a firm’s strategic planning in real estate development and investment. Through case studies, students receive a working knowledge of real options and its uses.
Real Estate Property Law: This course emphasizes the transactional nature of real estate law with emphasis on commercial real estate from both a landlord and tenant perspective. Topics covered include commercial development/acquisition including the entitlement process, purchase and sale transactions, ground leases, and leasing the project.
Real Estate Location: This course applies strategic marketing principles to the appropriate location for various types of real estate projects. A variety of research and facilitation methods are examined to reveal the target audience and provide intimate knowledge of them framed within a firm understanding of the competitive environment in order to maximize the profit of a real estate entrepreneur. Strategic branding paradigms for real estate developers and homebuilders are also discussed.
