Internships

Undergraduate Internships in Management provide an opportunity for outstanding students to gain on-the-job work experience related to their academic preparation and increase their employment potential at graduation. Employers benefit from an opportunity to evaluate potential employees on the job prior to making a long-term commitment, establishing a relationship with the Department and the school, and working with a very valuable ASU resource- our business students. The Management Department of Arizona State University strongly supports the concept of student internships, believing all students can benefit from the experience.

Prospective internship applicants should contact the Management Department’s Internship Coordinator, Greg Moorhead, as early as practicable to insure a timely and smooth application process. The Online Application for Undergraduate Internship should be completed and submitted prior to contacting the Internship Coordinator. If at all possible, and if the student already has an internship position established, bring a position description to that initial meeting. Applicants should call the department office at 480-965-3431 to determine Greg Moorhead's office hours.

Additional helpful information about internships in general may be found at the W. P. Carey School of Business internship web site at http://www.wpcarey.asu.edu/up/current-students/business-career-center/internships.cfm .... Students are urged to review this site.

How Do I Qualify for an Internship?

Internships are extremely valuable for your career either with or without college credits. Gaining college credits for your internship experience may require additional effort, but will enrich your experience and give formal recognition of your accomplishment. The Management Internship is available only to junior or senior Management majors who complete at least 2 courses offered by the Management Department before they begin the internship experience. A faculty member from the Management Department must recommend student applicants.

Can I Earn Credit for the Internship?

Three hours of credit may be earned for internships approved by the Management Department Internship Coordinator; credit accrues through enrollment in MGT484. Such credit can be earned only one time. Normally internship credit will not reduce either departmental or college degree requirements. However, certain older catalogs permit internship credit to be counted as a major elective. See your academic advisor if you have questions about this.

What Jobs are Eligible to be Internship Positions?

A wide range of opportunities might qualify for internship positions, but they must be approved in advance if the intern wishes to receive academic credit for the experience. Click here for a list of companies providing internships for Management students in recent semesters. Ingeneral, the following criteria are used to determine eligibility:

  1. All prospective internship opportunities must be paid positions.

  2. A prospective internship opportunity must entail a near-professional job position in an area defined by the coursework of the Management Department. For example, a clerical position in a Human Resources Department would not qualify since the clerical job description is normally inconsistent with the courses we offer. Similarly, a sales position is likely more marketing-oriented than managerial. A comprehensive job description, including duties and time allocations, prepared by the internship supervisor at the job site will be necessary to qualify the position.

  3. The intern's immediate supervisor will develop a training plan for the experience and agree to the timely evaluation of the intern.

What are the Requirements of the Internship Program?

The internship experience normally consists of a minimum of 120 hours at work, preferably spread over 10-12 weeks during a regular semester or in the summer. All interns will be evaluated by their job-site supervisor at the end of the internship experience, and this evaluation will be submitted to the Management Department's Internship Coordinator. There are no on-campus meetings or coursework in conjunction with the internship experience. However, the intern is responsible for the completion and timely submission of an Internship Paper. This project paper can take various forms. Prospective interns should contact the Management Department's Internship Coordinator to discuss Internship Paper options.

How Do I Locate an Internship Position?

The internship position may be obtained in a variety of ways. The majority of management students find their own positions, both through individual initiative or through postings at Career Services. In certain instances, a student's current employer might be willing to restructure that employment to facilitate the internship. The Management Department's Internship Coordinator may have a limited number of opportunities submitted by participating firms. All internship experiences must be approved by the Internship Coordinator before credit can be granted.

Why Would a Company Hire an Intern?

A successful internship will help employers meet performance objectives, provide an opportunity to closely evaluate a potential permanent employee, create a positive mentoring experience for the student and supervisor, establish closer relations with ASU and the Department of Management, and lead to positive discussions of the internship among a broad set of students during classroom discussions. While at the work site, all Management interns are expected to exhibit professional behavior, including hard work, meeting performance objectives, regular attendance, punctuality, and professional dress and demeanor. Additionally, interns comply with all policies, rules, and values that apply to company employees.
