Emotional Intelligence
During the Career Leadership course, you are introduced to the topic of Emotional Intelligence. It is a new field of psychology that explores your awareness of, and your ability to manage, your emotions and to recognize and relate to the emotions of others.
The W. P. Carey MBA has chosen to leverage this field as a strategic asset to our students, equipping them to become better managers. Research has shown that business executives with high Emotional Intelligence competencies are more successful leaders and outperform executives with lower Emotional Intelligence.
Emotional Competency Inventory
During the first year, you participate in a 360-degree survey, the Emotional Competency Inventory. An assessment is completed by former colleagues, supervisors, internal stakeholders and external business stakeholders. After consulting with your W. P. Carey Career Management coach, you identify two competencies to strengthen over the course of your summer internship. Throughout the summer you are in contact with your coach as you utilize Web-based tools developed by the Hay Group, including a journal. At the end of your internship, you again participate in the 360-degree survey. This time you are assessed by people you worked with during you internship and by MBA teammates.
The ultimate goal is to improve leadership skills through understanding and developing Emotional Intelligence.
