Management

Reading/Conference: Business Plan Competition

MGT 590

(3 CR)

Independent study program, designed to allow student teams the opportunity to develop a comprehensive business plan which will be presented in competition to judges from the community who have investment and/or entrepreneurial experience. All teams will be allowed to revise their business plans after the judging in order to take advantage of the panelists' criticisms and to prepare for the state-wide and national competitions for those teams interested in entering such competitions.

Prerequisite: MGT 591-Entrepreneurship
Instructor: Mike Denning, Ph.D.

Michael Denning, PhD, is an Adjunct Professor of Management. He teaches strategy, marketing, entrepreneurship and creativity. Mr. Denning is also an angel investor in small business enterprises that show significant potential in technology fields. He serves on the Boards of Directors of many of these investments and has served as interim President in several. Mr. Denning is a Chairman of three groups of The Executive Committee (a CEO development organization) and an executive consultant in turn-around situations, mergers and acquisitions, finance, global marketing and strategic planning. In addition, he serves as a Director or Trustee of several non-profit organizations.

Prior to his current activities, Mr. Denning founded, managed and successfully sold a full service independent staffing company (retained and contingency search as well as temporary services) which emphasized servicing the technology and financial service based industries in the SF Bay Area. The company set the standards for financial performance in its market and was recognized throughout the industry for innovative, premier approaches to service.

 

Organizational Change Consulting

In no other period of history has it been more important for those leading organizations to possess effective change management skills. Within the past few years, chaotic change has become the norm with rapid and fundamental changes affecting organizations in the form of downsizing, globalization, outsourcing, advances in information technology, restructuring and pressure to do "more with less." Such significant changes require an appropriate response from organizational leaders - yet most managers are not prepared to meet the challenge. This course is for "change leaders" - formal managers or consultants - who are interested in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, understand and lead others in bringing about effective organizational change.

Instructor: Kim McKinnon, Ph.D.

This course will be taught by Kim McKinnon - an organization development consultant. Kim has worked in the field of human effectiveness and organizational performance improvement for 23 years. He has held leadership and executive positions with three Fortune 500 companies and has worked with literally thousands of leaders at all organizational levels. Kim has consulted with a wide variety of organizations and industries including high-tech, aerospace, R&D, utilities, manufacturing, health care, city government and federal agencies. Kim has published articles on leadership effectiveness, change leadership and organizational innovation. He holds a master's degree in Organizational Behavior and a Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology.

 


Real Estate

Real Estate Strategy

Basic concepts in real estate investing for individuals. The course relates theoretical foundations to practical and profitable applications. Students will critically examine real estate investing strategies to determine which are most successful. Students will learn how to develop a successful and profitable personal real estate investing plan.

Note: Students who are not enrolled in the Evening Program or Technology, Science and Engineering may register for this course three weeks prior to the first course meeting.

Instructor: Mike Davis, PhD

Joseph M. (Mike) Davis, PhD, is a member of the ASU faculty and a successful real estate investor, developer, appraiser and consultant. He has consulted in over 35 states in real estate and tax matters. Because of his ongoing consultation with most of the major airlines, he is able to relate the world of corporate finance with real estate investing. He is a sought-after international speaker. Prof. Davis holds a PhD in real estate from the University of Georgia and an MBA from Texas A&M University.

Project Management

NOTE: Students in the High Technology, Science and Engineering may not enroll in this course.

The primary goal of this course is to prepare you to effectively manage projects -- the instrument of change in organizations. Projects are the instruments of change in organizations. The outcomes of projects include new products and services, and new processes, which lead to renewed organizational competitiveness. Best-in-class competitors can be characterized by careful management of their project portfolio, as well as effective project planning and control processes and tools. This course will provide you with an overview of the project management process, so that you are prepared to utilize projects as an instrument of strategic change in your organization. We will utilize case studies, in-class facilitated exercises, readings, and the class lectures to facilitate your learning.

The scope of course topics will include planning, organizing and controlling of projects in a variety of environments, including research and development, manufacturing, and service organizations, as well as the strategic context for projects. Topics covered will include project selection, planning methods, financial considerations in projects, project scheduling, project resource management and management of the project portfolio. The course will include coverage of current topics of interest, including time-based competition, concurrent engineering, micro-computer project planning packages, integrated product/process development, team selection and team building. The course project will involve the development of a project plan in team with three to five team members for a team member's company. Plan development will include the use of various project planning tools, including Microsoft Project as well as Critical Chain software tools.

Instructor: Dwight Smith-Daniels, PhD

Dwight E. Smith-Daniels is Associate Professor of Operations Management in the College of Business at Arizona State University. He is widely published in the field of Project Management, with publications in a variety of academic and practitioner journals, including the Journal of Operations Management, Decision Sciences, IIE Transactions, Naval Research Logistics and Production and Inventory Management. He is a member of the Editorial Review Board of The Project Management Journal, the journal of the Project Management Institute. Dr. Smith-Daniels has taught project management courses in the the Technology, Science and Engineering, the Executive Program, the Evening Program and the Applied Projects in the various full-time W. P. Carey MBA tracks for the past ten years. Project plans developed in these courses have been executed for projects at Boeing Helicopters, Honeywell, Intel, Motorola, American Express, Chase Bank, Bank One, Dial, Bank of America, St. Mary's Food Bank, Pulte Homes, and a wide variety of other service, charity and manufacturing companies in the valley and state. Dr. Smith-Daniels has also served as consultant to a variety of organizations including Intel, DialCorp, and the J.M. Smucker Co. Dr. Smith-Daniels is a member of the Project Management Institute, the leading international society in the field of project management, as well as the Decision Sciences Institute, INFORMS and the Production and Operations Management Society.

 


Information Management

Information Systems Security

Internet technology has opened a door that allows unscrupulous individuals to capture our most sensitive data, proprietary ideas, and eavesdrop on our most personal moments. To date that door has proven very difficult to close. The existence of this door requires every business leader to know the basic structure of information systems security. This course provides that structure.

The terror of 911 has impacted every aspect of our lives and has drawn attention to the need for a more robust approach to information systems security by all organizations. Today our lexicon of terms includes the computer hacker, viruses, WORMs, cyberterrorism, and so forth. Attacks on computer systems and networks worldwide has given birth to these terms. This course is designed to parallel the federal governments stated position that business, industry, and government leaders at all levels acquire an in-depth understanding of the elements that make up an integrated information systems security program.

During this course, we will review, discuss, and debate various government documents and laws and their impact on business. In this context, there will be an introduction and discussion of each of the nine major areas of information systems security:

  1. Information Systems Security Management Practices
  2. Security Models and Architecture
  3. Telecommunications and Networking Security
  4. Cryptography
  5. Law, Investigation and Ethics
  6. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
  7. Security Policies
  8. Access Control and Physical Security
  9. Cyberterrorism.
As we move through the course, we will consider the impact of each of these on various business environments.

If you are interested in obtaining a basic understanding of information systems security to support your career growth and enhance your performance now and in the future, then this course and material will serve you well. You will be able to raise intelligent and informed questions and contribute to decision-making processes related to information systems security regardless of your career field.

To register for this course, you must be an MBA student. You do not need a technical background although we will discuss technical subjects at a consumer level.

Prof. Balough brings over 25 years of experience to this course. He started in Cryptology while in the U.S. Army and branched out to general information systems security analysis and design. Since obtaining his Doctorate from The Ohio State University in 1982, Prof. Balough has worked with and been a consultant to many government projects either directly or indirectly related to information security.

When Prof. Balough started in the field, information security was the purview of the intelligence community and the military. Today, that is just not the case. He works with many business leaders who struggle to understand the information systems security world and its current or future impact on their business. Bear in mind that you will not be able to shift responsibility for security decisions just because you are not working in technology. Today's laws will not allow you to pass the mantle of responsibility for security decisions to the head of the computer department and/or the head of security. A computer security course will prepare you to better assume these responsibilities.

Sports Marketing

The sports marketing course focuses on the strategic role that marketing plays in generating revenue in the sports business industry. Students will gain an understanding of how professional sports teams, universities, conferences and associations market their properties and compete for their share of today's entertainment dollar. This course is also designed to give students a solid foundation for the concepts of sports marketing in what today has become a multi billion-dollar industry for corporations investing in sport sponsorships. More specifically by the end of this course students will:
  • be acquainted with the role marketing plays within a sports organizations and the impact it has on the overall business
  • develop an understanding of how corporations are using sports marketing to increase brand awareness and market share
  • develop an ability to make strategic decisions that relate to sports marketing and sponsorships
  • make strategically sound business decisions in the sports business context
  • identify and enhance revenue-generating opportunities with sports properties

Some of the major content areas that will be covered in this course include:

  • the role of the internet in sports
  • licensing and sponsorships
  • the role of CRM technology in sports
  • marketing promotions in sport
