Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What billing address should I provide for the W. P. Carey Dell website?
The text on the W. P. Carey Dell website says I should use the address on file with Dell. This is very confusing. The graphic shows a copy of the text on the Dell website.

Dell billing address note
IGNORE THIS TEXT. Students should enter the correct billing address of the credit card being used to purchase the laptop. Dell reported the text on the website cannot be removed because it is part of a system generated template.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure my laptop order on the W. P. Carey Dell website is complete? I received a Purchase ID number but I have not received a confirmation email and my credit card has not been charged.
Dell does not charge the credit card for the laptop cost until the order ships. Order shipment may take a few days so credit card charges may not be a quality indicator of order processing. Unfortunately this limbo order status situation cannot be resolved by Dell phone sales support. The Dell phone sales team are unable to view or retrieve these hung orders. Students experiencing this order problem should contact Mike Merrill who is the ASU Dell Account Executive. Mike can resolve purchasing problem. Mike can be reached at Mike_Merrill@Dell.com or cell phone of 512.632.3964. Dell is working to resolve this problem.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why is the laptop required?
Student laptop ownership will pave the way for innovations in instruction that incorporate web-based applications and electronic work-group initiatives. Access to computer technology in the classroom can encourage active rather than passive learning. When students in each classroom have access to their own laptop computer, faculty can undertake curriculum initiatives that allow students hands-on applications of delivered concepts. This fosters teamwork, group projects and the ability to communicate and coordinate schedules.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I already have a new laptop; do I need to purchase a Dell laptop?
All W. P. Carey MBA Full-time students are required to purchase a laptop from an approved group of Dell machines.  Purchasing program specified Dell laptop provides student with four notable benefits.   These four benefits are; quality hardware, enhanced warranty, a coordinated software configuration with faculty, labs and classrooms and quick, comprehensive support including loaner equipment..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why standardized laptops?
With standardized hardware and software, students can focus on course work rather than the technical details like file exchange, application configuration, and program interaction. More responsive support can be provided when the hardware specifications are common and the software configuration is the same. Individuals can receive a better volume discount price because of increased buying power.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do I have to purchase the Dell laptop through http://www.dell.com/wpcarey?
Individuals may have additional discounts or resources that provide justifiable incentive to purchase a specified Dell laptop through a different method or channel.  Students are strongly encouraged to compare all aspects of the laptop configuration before considering purchasing through an alternative method.  Hardware specifications are not the only considerations that make up the specified Dell laptop configuration.  3 yr warranty with Complete Care and shipment to ASU must also be included in the laptop configuration.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dell offers other laptops that have features I really want; can I purchase a different Dell laptop instead of the specified models?
To accomplish the four major benefits of the laptop program, it is necessary student choose from only the specified models.  Many times laptop manufactures including Dell releases the newest feature in non-business class models that have limited warranties or shorted life cycles. Dell machines are very configurable and many times specific features or accessory are available for the program specified laptops. Contact GBIT with specific feature requests and we can engage Mike Merrill the ASU Dell Account Executive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why must my computer be shipped to the W. P. Carey School of Business first?
The MBA Program has reduced the amount of time for incoming student orientation.  In the past, student laptops were configured during orientation.  To accommodate the shortened time schedule, all incoming student laptops need to be configured before the start of orientation.  Once the laptop arrives at the W. P. Carey School of business, it will be configured with the standard software image and be stored in a locked closet until the student arrives on campus and picks up their laptop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What technical support will I receive as a participant in the laptop program?
The Graduate Help Desk will work to ensure that laptops purchased functions correctly. If problems occur, diagnostic steps will be applied by the Help Desk to determine if problems are hardware or software. If the problem is determined to be a hardware malfunction, the student will receive a "loaner laptop" while their machine is sent to an authorized service center. If the problem is determined to be software or configuration, the student can be reimaged using a partial restore configuration. Students are responsible for backing up their own data, as the technical support staff will not assume responsibility for deleted data.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How is the computer configured for courses I will be taking?
Computers are shipped to the School of Business directly from the vendor to receive the base software configuration. Additional software needed for classes will be available to students when classes begin. Depending on the software and arrangements with faculty, additional software may be distributed by Citrix, by installation on laptop, or through lab machines.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What software can I access as a participant in the laptop program?
Student laptops are configured with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, Project, and Visio.  Upon request, student have Visual Studio.NET installed on their laptop. Student laptops can access additional research software including SAS, SPSS, Palisades, etc.
