Evening MBA Laptop Program

Overview
W. P. Carey Graduate students can improve their individual productivity by utilizing a laptop in their coursework.  Student in the market to purchase a laptop can benefit from Dell through W. P. Carey purchase site. The purchased laptop is shipped to the W. P. Carey School of Business for configuration.  Configuration includes software installation and customization to the individual student by the Graduate Business IT Support team (GBIT).  Students may pickup their laptop from GBIT prior to orientation. Students can receive assistance from the IT Help Desk located in the Graduate Suite and at each MBA offsite location.

Laptop Purchase
Dell has created a custom Premier purchase page for W. P. Carey Graduate students to review and purchase a laptop.  The W. P. Carey / Dell purchasing Web site is http://www.dell.com/wpcarey

The laptops listed on this page have been reviewed and approved by GBIT.  Students should choose a laptop listed on the W. P. Carey / Dell purchase Web site.  Other vendors or even other Dell laptops will not be compatible with the software configuration.

When purchasing a laptop, individuals can customize their selection by choosing different processor speeds, increasing system memory amount or by selecting a larger hard drive (these options do not impact the software configuration).  Students can also purchase additional accessories to enhance their laptop.

Laptop purchase should be completed by July 15, 2008 to allow the necessary time for Dell to deliver the laptop and for GBIT to configure the laptop before start of school in August.

Laptop Selection & Availability Update
Important note:  Dell has identified they will release this year's new line of laptops in late June 2008 with an August ship date. GBIT does not believe that new models will arrive before the start of school. If selecting the newest model is important, please continue to check back to the purchasing website.

Delivery Location
Students can expedite the configuration process by having their machine shipped directed to the School of Business.  Please use the following information for the laptop delivery address:

C/O Dwain Wiltbank
300 E. Lemon St.
BA 209 - Graduate Suite
Tempe, AZ 85287
(480) 965-1111

When a shipment arrives at the School of Business, GBIT will inventory the equipment and send an inventory e-mail to the purchaser.  Students need to respond to the inventory e-mail and confirm the hardware received is the intended order. Boxes will be stored in a locked closet until the student picks up the equipment.

Configuration
When an order arrives, GBIT will apply the approved software configuration to the laptop hard drive.  The configuration process takes one day for initial setup.  Laptops received throughout the summer up until August 1 will be configured in one day and and made available for a student to pickup.

Due to the increased commitments of our staff nearing the start of school, laptops received after August 1 will require two days to complete the configuration process.  Click on the configuration link to learn more about partition arrangement and approved software installation.

Technical Orientation
When a student is ready to pick up their laptop, there are two options for technical orientation;

  1. Follow self-paced instructions online to verify correct operation of laptop and software configuration or

  2. Schedule an appointment with a GBIT staff member for an assisted review of online documentation and to verify correct operation of the laptop and software configuration.

Whether self-paced or assisted, the technical orientation material covered identical.  The assisted sessions allow students to ask questions regarding individual circumstances and needs.

Program Benefits
Individuals who purchase a program laptop receive a compliment of benefits all condensed into a neat, simple package. These benefits cover a broad range of categories and provide a comprehensive arrangement. This benefits package includes quality hardware, hardware warranty, damage coverage, software configuration and support. Participants receive a two part package of benefits; half from Dell and half from the W. P. Carey School of Business. The combination of these benefits provide an industry leading laptop program. Further explanation about the Laptop Program Benefits can be read online.
