Software & Data - SSH Client for Unix Servers

Central IT has transitioned the Unix servers to the SSH secure client. In order to be able to access the general.asu.edu, stats.asu.edu, and research.asu.edu servers, users will need to install the SSH client.

What has changed?

Central IT requires a secure telnet and FTP program in order to log into the Unix servers including general.asu.edu, stats.asu.edu, and research.asu.edu. As a result, non-secure telnet and FTP clients do not work including: EWAN, WS_FTP, FTP Voyager, and Windows' built in telnet and FTP client.

Who is effected?

This change impacts anyone who uses telnet or FTP programs to connect to the Central IT Unix servers such as:

general.asu.edu

research.asu.edu

stats.asu.edu

How do I upgrade?

The SSH Client provided by Central IT acts as both a secure telnet and secure FTP program. It can be downloaded from Central IT at:

http://www.asu.edu/it/fyi/comm/sw/software/

Once you have downloaded the program, install it by running it from the location you saved it to. Once installed, you should have two icons on your desktop. The icon named "SSH Secure Shell Client" is the telnet program. The icon named "SSH Secure File Transfer Client" is the FTP program.
