Accessing Lexis-Nexis
The Lexis-Nexis database can be accessed from the Internet or through software on your
computer. Using the Internet allows access to fewer resources. However, the
number of users is unlimited.

What is Lexis?
Lexis is an online legal, news and
business information service.
The LEXIS service contains major archives of federal and state case law, continuously
updated statutes of all 50 states, state and federal regulations and public records from
major U.S. states. The LEXIS service has 41 specialized libraries covering all major
fields of practice, including tax, securities, banking, environmental, energy and
international. Convenient group files combine legal information from all jurisdictions
and, where appropriate, add sources of relevant business, financial or general news. A
subscriber to the LEXIS service may also have access to the NEXIS service and its related
services.
The Hot Topics library contains summaries of the latest legal and regulatory
developments within nearly 40 practice areas. The 2NDARY library contains ALI Restatements
of the Law, ALR® and LEd2d articles and selected state jurisprudence and is a great place
to start researching secondary legal research materials.
The LEXIS service contains libraries of English, French and Canadian law, and other
legal materials from Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Ireland and Scotland. In addition,
the service has a full complement of research tools, including an online Guide which
provides detailed descriptions of all NEXIS and selected LEXIS libraries.
The NEXIS® Service
The NEXIS service is a leading news and business information service which contains
more than 7,100 sources, of which 3,700 provide their entire publications online. These
include regional, national and international newspapers, news wires, magazines, trade
journals and business publications.
The NEXIS service is the exclusive online archival source for The New York Times in the
legal, business and other professional markets. The NEXIS service also offers several
thousand other news sources including The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Business
Week, Fortune, and The Economist. It is a one-stop service for both national network and
regional television broadcast transcripts, in addition to carrying CNN and National Public
Radio news and features. Major news services of China, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the
U.K., the unified Russian republics and the United States are vital sources of
international business information and news. In addition, the NEXIS service contains more
than 2,000 sources of abstracts including The Wall Street Journal.
The NEXIS service also offers: brokerage house and industry analyst reports; public
records such as corporate filings, company records and property records; tax information;
plus political analysis and information.
The NEXIS service assists users in many ways. The Top News (TOPNWS) library contains
same-day news from selected key sources from around the world, including news wires -- the
Associated Press, Reuters, The New York Times News Service, Agence France-Press and Xinhua
-- and major metropolitan newspapers. Users also can select libraries by topic.
The NEXIS Market library, for instance, focuses on marketing and industry news by
specific industry. Topics libraries include banks, business and finance, computers and
communications, energy, entertainment and environment.
NEXIS service "hot files" are placed online within 24 hours in some cases
when rapid-fire developments in domestic or foreign affairs create extraordinary interest
among users. The special files combine information from sources scattered throughout its
grouped files.
Other LEXIS-NEXIS features, products
- EdgarPlus is offered on the LEXIS-NEXIS services through an agreement with
Disclosure Incorporated, allowing access to SEC filings and a series of SEC products
developed from EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval system) data. When
implementation is completed in 1996, more than 15,000 companies will electronically file
required SEC documents through the EDGAR system.
- The ECLIPSE feature (Electronic Clipping Service) automatically reports new
materials that correspond to a saved search request. The reports can be issued daily,
business days, weekly or monthly via fax, e-mail or viewed online at the customer's
convenience.
- The "MORE" command takes full-text, online searching to a new dimension
by enabling a LEXIS-NEXIS subscriber to use a single document as a model to retrieve more
documents that resemble it. The search is formulated automatically for the user by
extracting key terms from the model document.
- The FOCUS feature enables the narrowing of a search request by determining if
additional search terms appear within a set of already-retrieved documents.
- The LEXDOC® feature allows LEXIS-NEXIS subscribers to order copies of public
records documents retrieved from any jurisdiction -- state or local -- in the country
through the LEXDOC feature. Public records filed in Canada and the Virgin Islands are also
available. Orders are handled by LEXIS® Document Services.
- LEXIS® Public Records Online service is a powerful litigation research tool that
provides online access to information from selected states about real and personal
property assets, Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) liens, secretary of state corporation
filings, a verdicts and settlements library, and court indices and dockets.
- LEXIS-NEXIS has two unique Web-based tools with which to conduct
searches. LEXIS-NEXIS reQUESTer Direct searches news, company
information, financial information, and more. LEXIS-NEXIS reQUESTer
Major Papers searches regional and national papers. Both are

1. How do I access Lexis Nexis? Lexis data can be accessed either through
the Lexis Research software or through the Lexis Academic Universe website
at http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe
2. What are the differences between the Lexis Research software and the
Lexis Academic Universe website? The Lexis Research software provides and
application interface in which to construct queries that are then submitted
via the Internet. In addition, there is a 2 simultaneous user limit for the
software. Lexis Academic Universe is available on the web and has no user
limits. However, the data offering through Academic Universe are not as
comprehensive as those in the Lexis Research software.
3. I get an error after selecting one of the two id’s during the Lexis
Research software log in process. What is wrong? The Lexis Research software
has a two simultaneous user limit. Try selecting the second id number. If
neither number works, two users are already on the system.
4. Can I use Lexis Academic Universe at home? Lexis Academic Universe is
IP verified. Therefore, to access the Lexis Academic Universe website from
home, you will need to be logged onto the internet through ASU PPP dialup.
