Software & Data - Citrix for Research

The W. P. Carey School of Business has Citrix available for use by faculty, staff, and PhD students.

What is Citrix?

Citrix is a remote access client. It allows a user to connect to the Citrix servers and remotely run an application. The application actually runs on the server. However, the user sees the application open on his computer. Applications running on Citrix have access to the network including the users G: drive and can still access the users local drives including the C: drive and floppy drives. In addition, users can print from within an application to the local printer connected to their computer.

What are the advantages of Citrix?

Citrix allows users to run applications without having to first install each application on their computer. In addition, applications run within Citrix can see that user's local and network drives including their G: drive. With Citrix, users can log into the Citrix server from home or on the road using any ISP such as AOL, Earthlink, ATT, etc. and run applications such as SAS with full access to the network drives.

Who is it available to?

Citrix is available for use by faculty, staff, and PhD students.

What operating system do I need to use Citrix?

To use Citrix, you will need Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

What applications are available within Citrix?

A variety of research applications are available within Citrix including SAS, SPSS, Eviews, and Research Insight. In addition, there is an icon entitled Research Web Links which allows users to access online data services including Lexis Nexis Academic Universe, Dow Jones, and Market Insight.

How do I get a Citrix account?

Send an email to wpcareysupport@asu.edu requesting a Citrix account. Include your username, your ASU email address, and your status (faculty, staff, PhD student).

How do I access Citrix once I have an account?

Go to http://citrix.wpcarey.asu.edu . If you have not already installed the Citrix Web Client, a message will appear in the lower right area of the page instructing you to do so. Click on the link titled "Citrix ICA Web Client for 32-bit Windows". Save and run the program. Click "Yes" to install it and "Yes" to accept the license. Once installed, close down all of your Internet Explorer windows and restart IE. Return to http://citrix.wpcarey.asu.edu and enter your username and password. At this point, you will be logged into Citrix and should see a list of applications available. Click on the application icons to run them.

What are the limitations of Citrix for research?

Since the applications actually run on the Citrix servers, the speed of the applications may vary depending on how many users are on and how processor and memory intensive the applications being run are. If users need to run very intensive sessions such as SAS programs that take hours or days to complete, the need to run the job locally instead of through Citrix. Citrix is currently deployed with instructional use in mind and should not be used for computationally intense jobs or data runs.

When I try to access SAS in Citrix, the top of the web browser changes but nothing happens. What is wrong?

The Citrix server has reach its maximum load and has refused the connect. You should wait a little while and try connecting again.

I am getting a "ICA not found" error when I try to connect to Citrix. What is wrong?
