Why Computer Information Systems?

Computer Information Systems is one of the undergraduate majors offered by the W. P. Carey School of Business.  Computer Information Systems is part of every business and organization.  With a degree in computer information systems, you may choose among opportunities in consulting, industry, government or not-for-profit organizations.  Students gain extensive experience with the technology and practices in use within businesses, as well as strategic uses of information technology.  Graduates are well prepared not only for entry-level positions but also for advancing to C level positions such as Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Technology Office (CTO) or Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Carey School of Business Computer Information Systems Undergraduate Program, you must first apply to Arizona State University.  




FAQ's

What is the difference between the CIS major and the CSE major?
CIS (Computer Information Systems) is offered through the W. P. Carey School of Business. The CIS degree consists of a business foundation with a major in computer information in business.  Students learn problem solving, critical thinking, communication and team skills, which prepare them for leadership positions in the information systems field.  Students gain familiarity with modeling business process workflows, systems integration, and project management.   

CSE (Computer Systems Engineering) is offered through the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering. Unlike the CIS degree, CSE is focused towards the goal of becoming a programmer. They have emphasis in hardware and software.

What are my chances in being admitted to the Professional Program?
Applicants are reviewed using a portfolio approach. Among the factors considered are: cumulative GPA, skill course GPA, transfer GPA and institution (if applicable), work experience, demonstrated community involvement and leadership skills, and responses to questions located in the professional program application.

As a transfer student, do I need to be admitted to the University before I can apply to the Professional Program?
In order for you to be considered for admission to the Professional Program, you need to be admitted to the University for the semester of which you are applying for admission to the program.

Why do I have to take other business courses in addition to my major courses?
Our program allows a student to obtain a business background so that they succeed within business. Most recruiters are looking for not only technical skills, but also the ability to communicate with others and knowledge of business principles.

How do I get involved with the Computer Information Systems student organization?
The Department of Information Systems Club is a student organization targeted at current and prospective Computer Information Systems majors. For information on the organization, refer to their web site at http://www.asudisc.org.  You do not have to be a CIS major to be a member.
