The Doctoral Program in Information Systems at Arizona State University is designed to provide the skills needed for a successful academic career at leading research universities.
Research-intensive program: Our program is research-focused – students get hands-on experience with research projects beginning in the very first semester. In each of their first two years in the program, students are required to enroll in a supervised project course that involves being mentored on research practices by working directly with our faculty. Outcomes from these efforts have allowed our Ph.D. students to present research at leading national and international conferences in the discipline. Our students and faculty have also published in the leading IS journals including Information Systems Research, the Journal of Association for Information Systems, the Journal of Management Information Systems, Management Science, INFORMS Journal of Computing and MIS Quarterly. Our students and faculty have also published in the leading IEEE and ACM journals, and other specialty journals.
Develop teaching skills: All students have the opportunity to acquire classroom teaching experience. Typically, our Ph.D. students teach for 2 to 4 semesters during their course of study.
Industry collaboration: The IS department’s Center for Advancing Business through Information Technology (CABIT) conducts sponsored research projects with major companies and government agencies. These research projects provide students with the opportunity to explore technology issues in their real-world managerial and industry contexts.
Our doctoral program currently has 11 students. Our large number of faculty (15 tenure-track) results in a low student-to-faculty ratio that provides plenty of opportunity for interaction and mentoring. Faculty members serve on the editorial boards of Information Systems Research, the Journal of Association for Information Systems, the Journal of Management Information Systems, Management Science, and MIS Quarterly. Current research areas and themes include:
- Accounting Information Systems - Electronic Markets and Mechanism Design
- Business Intelligence and Data Mining - Information Security
- Business Process Management - IT Adoption and Diffusion
- Competitive Strategy and Technology - IT Services and Outsourcing
- Databases and Data Warehousing - Open Source and Software Development
- E-commerce and E-business - Technology and Public Policy
- Economics of IS - Virtual Communities and Social Networks
