Professional Program

The Professional Program within the W. P. Carey School of Business consists of the 300- and 400-level business courses from the undergraduate curriculum. Career Choices In Computer Information Systems

Consulting
Exposure to a wide range of companies and industries and work within many different business practices.  Gain expertise in such areas as driving strategic initiatives, making technology recommendations and designing and managing changing business processes.  Constantly learning and finding ways to add value to their clients business.  Design, install and implement information systems and networks; Review and analyze existing systems to improve efficiency, security and operating processes; Select and install computer packages, training and subsequent support for users.

Systems Analyst
Interfaces with decision-makers from all areas of business to develop projects that meet the information needs of the users.  Design and manage specifications for applications. Analyze system usage and performance and recommend improvements.

Database Administrator
Design, create, implement and maintain databases, which accumulate and organize necessary information.  Work with users in designing and writing application programs to extract information in a form useful in decision making.

Systems Administrator
Specifies architecture to integrate databases, application programs, networks and hardware. Design, implement and maintain data security measures, manage networks and monitor performance.

Network Engineer
Install, configure and support personal computers within a networked environment. Design, install and maintain network to ensure compatibility, security and effectiveness. Troubleshoot network connections, provide help desk support and training for users.

Major Proficiency Requirements

In addition to college and university requirements, Computer Information Systems majors must receive grades of "C" or higher in the required upper-division major and major support courses. If a student receives a grade below "C" in any required upper-division major course, this course must be repeated before any other upper-division major course can be taken. If a second grade below "C" is received in either an upper-division major course already taken or in a different upper-division major course, the student is no longer eligible to take additional upper-division major courses.

When do I file for graduation?

You file for graduation the semester you plan to graduate. If graduating in May, the deadline is typically early March. If graduating in August, the deadline is typically early July. If graduating in December, the deadline is typically early October. You can download an application for graduation form at www.asu.edu/registrar/forms.

Go to the Cashier's Office located on the second floor of the Student Services Building and pay the graduation fee. They will then send you to the Graduation Office to process your request.

Do you allow late drop/adds to be processed?

No. No exceptions will be made. Please refer to the current semester Schedule of Classes for semester late add/drop deadlines. 

Do you allow late restricted withdrawals?

No. No exceptions will be made. Please refer to the current semester Schedule of Classes for semester withdrawal deadlines.

Who is my CIS advisor?

If you are admitted to the W. P. Carey School of Business as a Computer Information Systems major, please contact the undergraduate CIS advisor with the W. P. Carey Undergraduate office. 

Do I need to do an internship?

Although an internship is not required to graduate from the Computer Information Systems program, it is strongly recommended that you participate in one. An internship will give you valuable experience to take with you when you graduate, but also allow you some visibility into the Computer Information Systems field to help you determine what career path you would like to take.

How do I obtain an internship?

The Business Career Center was established to assist W. P. Carey School of Business students explore their career options and then coach them in the most effective methods of job search.

How do I get involved with the student organization representing my major?

The Department of Information Systems Club (DISC) is a student organization targeted at current and prospective Computer Information Systems majors. 

For more information on the organization, refer to their web site at http://www.asudisc.org. You do not have to be a CIS major to be a member.

Can I take courses without the assigned pre-requisites?

No. No exceptions will be given. Please refer to the current undergraduate catalog for complete course prerequisites. 

How can I keep up with the changes in the program?

Make contact with your academic CIS advisor every semester when registering for courses for the following semester.
