MBA Student Investment Management Fund

The W. P. Carey MBA Investment Management Fund (SIM Fund) was established in 1996 by the Department of Finance at Arizona State University. Initial contributions to the Fund were provided by generous private donors and the Arizona State University Foundation Endowment Fund.

The goal of the Fund is to provide participating Master of Business Administration students with practical, hands-on experience in portfolio management and securities analysis while they earn credit towards their MBA degrees. In addition, students will be exposed to other aspects of money management, including various administrative duties. A team of students will be selected each year through a competitive process. This team will actively manage the Fund during the second year of their MBA program.

The portfolio of investments represents a diverse collection of investment vehicles, ranging from equities to fixed income securities. Equity investments will cover companies that extend across many industries.

Fund Advisory Board Presentations

A Fund Advisory Board composed of investment professionals oversees the fund, and twice a year the students involved present to this board reports that include rationale for fund decisions and management, and fund performance.  Here are links to full presentations for the 2008-2009 academic year reports, as well as a compilation of return information for 1997-2008 (with the exception of 2005):

How to Get Involved*

Each year, four to six students who are candidates for the MBA degree with Finance concentration become engaged in the MBA SIM Fund team.  Students must apply to join.  Generally, MBA students who will have earned second-year status by the fall of enrollment are eligible for consideration.  Applications may be submitted for the 2010-2011 academic year only between February 15 and March 15, 2010.  No late applications will be accepted.  Interested students should e-mail the following application materials to Jeanne Elliott at jeanne.elliott@asu.edu with the subject line SIM Fund Application:

  • Resume
  • Unofficial transcript
  • 1-2 page statement to include the following:
    • Brief statement of candidate’s career goals and interest in fund involvement
    • Half-page summary of current economic conditions
    • Half-page summary of a stock the candidate would pitch to buy today
    • Summary of candidate’s academic and professional background that indicates what the person would contribute to the fund.
Applications will be reviewed by the fund director and current fund members.  Selection will be announced before April 1, 2010.
