Undergraduate Finance Program

The Department of Finance has a rich tradition of educating leaders that excel in the discipline. Whether ascending to the top ranks of the venture capital industry, executing multimillion-dollar real estate deals, or becoming successful entrepreneurs with ideas and drive that are all their own, our graduates are equipped to succeed. Numerous opportunities exist for finance students to hear and meet with business leaders and our faculty in and outside the classroom. In particular, our Investment Banking Industry Scholars Program mentors students interested in going to Wall Street, while the Student Investment Management Fund provides undergraduates the opportunity to manage a real-world investment portfolio worth hundreds of thousands of dollars under the direction of our faculty and industry leaders. Finance Internships enable students to obtain practical experience in small business, governmental, profit and nonprofit corporations. Regular offerings by the Financial Management Association help our students develop an understanding of the work done by career professionals in finance.

Finance Faculty

The finance faculty is internationally known for high quality teaching and scholarship. Numerous alumni with a depth of experience in the financial world participate in our classrooms as speakers and adjunct professors. Our professional advisory board, comprised of leading professionals from the financial services, high tech manufacturing, energy production and transmission, investment banking and real estate sectors, provides a sounding board for new ideas and a source of jobs for our top graduates.

Prerequisite Courses

A student with a strong foundation of knowledge from preparatory courses in economics, accounting, statistics and calculus will have a better understanding and appreciation of advanced finance topics offered by the Department of Finance. Finance topics are inherently quantitative, and finance theories are based on economic reasoning and an understanding of financial reporting. For this reason, students must meet prerequisite requirements before they are allowed to enroll in courses offered by the Department of Finance. The prerequisites from outside the department for finance courses include the following: ACC 231 and 241, Mat 210 and 211, CIS 105 or 220, ECN 211, 212 and 221, SCM 300, and LES 305.

Required Finance Courses

Finance majors study financial markets, the allocation of financial resources by individuals, corporations and other groups, and the tools financial managers use to make business decisions. Topics include corporate financial management, investment and security analysis, portfolio management, commercial banking, investment banking, insurance and risk management, personal finance, real estate, fixed income securities, market derivatives, venture capital, entrepreneurship, and international finance.

Finance students must earn 18 credit hours to complete the major. The following courses are required by all finance majors: FIN 302 or FIN 303, ACC 340, FIN 331, FIN 361, FIN 421, and FIN 461. Honors students may substitute FIN 303 for FIN 302 and FIN 361.
