Michael Keane (CV)

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Professor Michael Keane has been named an ASU Research Fellow.  He previously visited ASU from 2003-2005 as the Goldwater Chair. Professor Keane is best known for co-developing a probability simulator, which for the first time made it practical to estimate discrete choice models that have more than just a few alternatives. Applications of this methodology are widespread. For example, in marketing, the technique is used widely when estimating price sensitivities of demand in markets with many different brands, as one example. In labor economics, applications include modeling students' choice of major in college, or modeling workers' occupational choices. In the area of health economics, the simulator has been used to model decisions on the choice of insurance plans, as an example.

His writings span a large number of topics, some of it highly technical and some of it applied. In additional to his more technical econometric work, he has also written on financial aid in higher education, the economic transition in Poland, the political economy of Congressional careers, the effect of advertising on consumer behavior, U.S.-Canada trade liberalization, equalizing race differences in school attainment, health plan choice, welfare reform, and much more.

Currently, a Professor of Economics at Yale, he previously held faculty positions at NYU and the University of Minnesota. He earned his Ph.D. at Brown and his B.S. at MIT. He serves the profession as the Associate Editor at Econometrica, and as a member of the Peer Review Panel for the NIH.

As the Goldwater Chair, Professor Keane taught Ph.D. students in the Department of Economics at ASU. He also provided a public lecture for the university at large.
