   Economics Department Welcome

The Department of Economics at Arizona State University is located in the W. P. Carey School of Business. The past few years have been a time of rapid change for the department. Since 1995, the department has grown from 18 to 24 economists and also includes four business statisticians in quantitative business analysis. During this time period, we have filled three new endowed professorships. We are excited to have had Manuel Santos, Bank One Professor of Economics, Richard Rogerson, Rondthaler Professor of Economics, and Lin Zhou, Professor of Economics, join our faculty.

The department is highly regarded not only for the research activity of its faculty, but also for the instructional performance of its faculty and high quality students. The research of the faculty has appeared in all of the best academic journals in the profession, and has been presented at conferences and seminars around the world. Professionally, the faculty have editorial positions on many journals, including the Journal of Economic Theory, the Journal of Monetary Economics, the International Economic Review, Economic Theory, the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Mathematical Social Sciences, the Journal of International Money and Finance (co-editor), the Review of Economic Dynamics (co-editor), and others.

In terms of instruction, state-of-the-art technology is being introduced in the classroom at all levels. Ten different faculty have won the W. P. Carey School of Business Teacher-of-the Year award, some more than once. Two have won the Arizona Professor of the Year award, sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation.

In the last five years, a significant number of economics students have won major awards including four students who have won the Moeur award, given to the graduating student with the highest academic standing in their four years of undergraduate work at ASU. Our alumni have achieved great things. Many have gone on to Ph.D. programs, Law Schools and even Medical Schools at the finest universities. Others have selected professional careers and achieved prominence in business, such as chief operating officer of e-Bay, and government. Our newsletters provide updates regarding alumni activity and department information.

We invite you to peruse our website to learn more about the department. Information is provided about our degree programs (bachelor degrees in both the W. P. Carey School of Business and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, M.S., and Ph.D. programs), scholarships that we offer students, student organizations, our faculty, and our alumni.
