Nevada Update and Outlook

Although gains in visitor volume outpaced those of gaming revenue in 2010 and 2011, gaming revenues were particularly strong in late 2011. Gaming revenue and visitor volume are likely to grow in a more closely related manner in 2012 and 2013. Nevada seems to have turned the corner on employment. Look for continued employment gains in 2011 and 2012. Southern Nevada housing remains overbuilt, but construction was fairly close to bottom by the end of 2011. Sufficient aborption of vacant housing may be possible by late 2013 that we will see strengtening gains in housing construction by late 2013 or early 2014.

University of Nevada at Las Vegas - CBER

Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 12.6 percent in December, bringing the total number of unemployed in the state to 166,300. This is the second consecutive month that the unemployment rate has declined. A year ago, the rate hit a record high of 14.9 percent.

On the jobs front, December employment readings came in 3,500 higher than a year ago, the fourth consecutive gain. For the entire year, Nevada added about 2,100 jobs (preliminary estimate), the first such gain since 2007.
