California Update and Outlook


In December 2011, the number of employed Californians rose by 73,000 to 16,198,000. There were more employed Californians in December 2011 than in any month since May 2009. California has now experienced four consecutive large monthly employment increases, with the increase over the period totaling 367,000 persons. As a result of this growth spurt, California’s year-over civilian employment gain totaled 320,000 (2.0 percent) in December 2011. This was the state’s largest year-over employment gain in both number and percent since September 2005.
