April 2013 Data Released May 2013
In the U.S. economy:
- The U.S. economy increased by 2,094,000 nonagricultural jobs in April 2013 over April 2012, a 1.57 percent increase.
- The goods producing sector increased by 251,000 jobs, a 1.38 percent increase in April 2013 compared to April 2012.
- The service providing sector increased by 1,843,000 jobs in April 2013 over April 2012, a 1.60 percent increase.
Among the states:
- North Dakota recorded the largest increase in total nonagricultural jobs in April 2013 over April 2012, with a 3.48 percent increase representing 14,800 jobs.
- The largest rate of total nonagricultural jobs lost for April 2013, compared to April 2012, was in Wyoming, with a 0.91 percent decrease (2,600 jobs).
- New Jersey recorded a job increase (19,400 jobs) in the educational and health services sector, which equaled 3.12 percent growth in April 2013 compared to April 2012.
- Michigan recorded a 4.14 percent job growth in the manufacturing sector in April 2013 compared to April 2012, which represents 21,900 jobs.
- Georgia recorded 5.53 percent job growth in the professional and business services sector in April 2013 compared to April 2013, which represents 31,000 jobs.
Among the metro areas:
- In metropolitan markets with under 1,000,000 workers, the Midland, TX metropolitan area ranked first in nonagricultural job growth for April 2013 over April 2012, posting an 6.88 percent gain, which represented 5,500 jobs.
- Among metropolitan markets with a workforce of over 1,000,000, the Houston-Baytown-Sugar Land, TX metropolitan area ranked first in nonagricultural job growth for April 2013 over April 2012, posting a 4.17 percent gain, which represented 111,200 jobs.
