Distinguished Achievement Award Mike Haynes

ASU Business honored football legend and golf executive:Mike Haynes with the Distinguished Achievement Award

ASU alumnus Mike Haynes, a football legend and Vice President of Callaway Golf Company, was honored with the Distinguished Achievement Award at the W. P. Carey School of Business Graduation Convocation on May 10.

The Distinguished Achievement Award is presented to leaders who have attained distinction in a profession or field, and who have made significant contributions to the development of the School of Business.

"Mike is one of those individuals whom I really enjoy recognizing with this honor," said Larry E. Penley, Dean of the School of Business. "He exceeds any criteria for it that ASU could establish. He is a great athlete and a fine business person. His support for students is evident in the scholarship supported by Mike and named in his honor."

Haynes, a 1982 Finance graduate, is well known to football fans as an ASU Sun Devil defensive back who went on to a spectacular career in the NFL. Drafted by the New England Patriots in 1976, he was traded to the Los Angeles Raiders in 1983. While a member of the Raiders squad, he helped the team win Super Bowl XVIII with a spectacular pass interception. Haynes was rewarded with a spot in both the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1997) and the College Football Hall of Fame (2000).

After leaving pro football, Haynes was a sports broadcaster and a golf tournament organizer before accepting a top executive position managing licensing agreements with Callaway Golf Company in 1994. Now Callaway's Vice President, Haynes is leading the company's efforts to grow the game of golf by reaching out to new markets. As a sports executive, Haynes uses his platform to spread a message of encouragement to women and minorities that the industry offers many career paths in addition to participation as a player.

Haynes has also been a strong supporter of the School of Business. In 1993 he first lent his name and his resources to a golf tournament benefiting the Mike Haynes Scholarship at the School. The 8th Annual Mike Haynes ASU Golf Classic will be played November 17 at La Sendas Golf Club. Haynes also donates personal appearance fees to the scholarship fund. The Haynes Scholarship supports two students from under represented groups at $1,000 each per year.

Previous recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award include Cisco CFO Larry Carter, scholarship benefactor Edward Rondthaler IV, entrepreneur Gary Trujillo, and Eric Crown, CEO of Insight Enterprises, Incorporated.

The School of Business is proud to add Mike Haynes to this distinguished roster.
