International Applicants
International applicants are required to provide a number of specific items to their applications. Most of these are referenced in the online application,
but the following serves as a quick reference guide. Detailed information for international applicants may be found on the page for F-1 and J-1 applicants
and on the International Applicants and International Documents
page.
Transcripts and Degree Requirements
The ASU Graduate College requires that international transcripts
be designated as official and be submitted in their original language with an English translation.
Individuals who have completed a three-year degree with no additional coursework typically do not qualify as having an equivalent U.S. bachelor's degree. Generally, for a three-year bachelor's degree to be equivalent it must be combined with the following:
- At least one year of study toward a two-year degree program such as an M.S., M.A., M.Com., MBA or LLB.
- Any one-year diploma in the same field of study such as B.Ed., M.A., M.S., or M.Phil.
- A second bachelor's degree.
The ASU Graduate College has ultimate responsibility for transcript evaluation and approval of degree equivalency.
English Language Proficiency
Most international applicants are required to submit evidence of English language proficiency, particularly if English is not your first language. Students applying for teaching assistantships are required to take the Test of Spoken English (TSE). The minimum TOEFL requirement is 550 (PBT) or 80 (iBT). Applications will not be processed until official TOEFL scores have been received by Graduate Admissions.
More information on the TOEFL and TSE can be found at: The TOEFL is administered by TOEFL/TSE Services, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ, 08541-6151, USA. Information is available on the internet at www.toefl.org
or by e-mail at toefl@ets.org. ASU's institutional code is 4007.
Application Fee
The application fee for international students is $90 (effective May 2009) and must be paid online at the time of application submission. More information about fees can be found on the Graduate Degree Applicants
page.
Visas and Financial Guarantee
Documentation to secure a visa
is provided by the ASU Graduate College three to five months prior to the term of enrollment. Upon admission, a Financial Guarantee form and an enrollment deposit are required before visa documents can be sent.
International Student Experience
We encourage our international students to become involved in the activities coordinated by the Graduate Advisory Board. You will be informed of these activities throughout your program. Also, the American English and Culture Program (AECP)
offers specially designed programs and activities for international students.
